NOTE: These rankings are WIN’s TPI (Tournament Power Index), which will be updated on Monday, Nov. 22, after the NWCA All-Star Classic in Fresno, Calif.
1. Cornell — Opens season Nov. 19 in home dual vs. No. 8 Central Michigan
2. Oklahoma State — Eight Cowboys won titles at the Oklahoma City Open (Nov. 7): 125 – Jon Morrison; 133 – Jordan Oliver; 141 – Luke Silver; 149 – Jamal Parks; 157 – Stephen Swan; 165 – Dallas Bailey; 174 – Chris McNeil; 197 – Clayton Foster.
- — Chris Perry, ranked 5th at 184, lost to Oklahoma’s Erich Schmidke, 11-3 in the finals. Meanwhile heavyweight Alan Gelogaev lost by injury default to Oklahoma’s Joe Bach.
- — Luke Silver also beat Oklahoma’s Kendric Maple, ranked 6th at 133, in the semifinals, 6-5, at 141. Silver then beat teammate Josh Kindig, 7-6, in final.
- — Jamal Parks defeated teammate Albert White, 3-1,in 149-pound final.
3. Boise State — defeated North Idaho College, 33-12 (Nov. 7) in Spokane, Wash.:
- — Alan Bartelli (125) and Jason Chamberlain (149) recorded pins while Andrew Hochstrasser (133) and Adam Hall (157) earned technical falls.
- — North Idaho is ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA national preseason poll.
4. Minnesota — Opens season Nov. 13 at Bison Open in Fargo, N.D.
5. Wisconsin — Opens season Nov. 19 vs. UNC Greensboro in Raleigh, N.C.
6. Oklahoma — Eric Schmidke (184) and Joe Bach (Hwt) won titles at Oklahoma City Open with Schmidke beating No. 5 Chris Perry of Oklahoma State, 11-3, in the finals. Schmidke, a redshirt sophomore from Aberdeen, Wash., finished 16-19 last year for the Sooners. Kendric Maple, ranked No. 6 at 133, competed at 141 pounds and finished second to OSU’s Luke Silver
7. Penn State — Opens season Nov. 12, at Bloomsburg, Pa.
8. Central Michigan — Sophomore Christian Cullinan (125) finished second at the Eastern Michigan Open where he lost to Michigan’s Sean Boyle in the finals. CMU did not send its complete team.
9. Illinois — B.J. Futrell (133) and Mario Gonzales (197) won titles at the Lindenwood Open (Oct. 31) in St. Charles, Mo.
10. Ohio State —Ian Paddock (133), Colt Sponseller (157) and Nick Heflin (174) won championships at the Buffalo (N.Y.) Open, Nov. 7. Paddock, ranked No. 5, defeated No. 17 Kevin Smith (Buffalo), 6-0, in the finals.
11. Iowa — Opens season Nov. 19 vs. Iowa Central and Coe College at home
12. Missouri — Freshman Alan Waters (125), junior Danny Gonsor (157) and sophomore Nick Gregoris (165) all won championships at the Lindenwood Open (Nov. 1) in St. Charles, Mo. It was Gonsor’s first action after transferring from the University of Virginia.
13t. Pittsburgh — Six Panthers Tyler Nauman (141), Adam Counterman (165), Ethan Headlee (174), Max Thomusseit (184), Zac Thomusseit (197) and Ryan Tomei (Hwt) won titles at Clarion (Pa.) Open. Headlee trailed 6-2 before coming back to beat Rutgers’ Greg Zanetti, 9-6. It was the first career titles for Counterman and Max Thomusseit.
13t. Purdue — The Boilermakers opened season at the Edinboro Comfort Suites Duals, Nov. 6, where they defeated Hofstra, 28-6, and tied the host school Edinboro, 16-16.
- — In the victory against Hofstra, junior Jake Fleckenstein upset 8th-ranked Lou Ruggirello, 2-1, at 133 pounds by scoring the only takedown late in the third period. Also Sam Patascil upset No. 16 Justin Accordino, 9-3, at 149 pounds … and No. 9 Luke Manuel defeated the Pride’s No. 16 Ryan Patrovich, 4-2 in sudden victory at 174 pounds.
- — In the tie with Edinboro, the Boilers trailed 16-6 before Purdue won the final three matches: No. 14 A.J. Kissel def. Kenneth Massey at 184, 11-0; No. 7 Logan Brown defeated Shawn Fendone (EU), 8-3 at 197; and Roger Vukobratovich beat Ernest James, 12-7 at heavyweight.
15. Edinboro — The Fighting Scots tied Purdue, 16-16, and lost to Hofstra, 26-8 at the Edinboro Comfort Suites Duals.
- — In the tie with Purdue, the Scots led 9-3 by winning three of first four weights, including wins by Eric Morrill (133) and Torsten Gillespie (149).
- — In the loss to Hofstra, the Scots lost the first four weights, including at 149 where Hofstra’s No. 16 Justin Accordino beat No. 4 Torsten Gillespie, 5-1. Also Eric Morrill lost 4-2 to No. 8 Lou Ruggirello at 133.
16t. Michigan — Sophomore Sean Boyle (125), junior Kellen Russell (141) and senior Anthony Biondo (197) won titles at the Eastern Michigan Open.
16t. Northwestern — defeated both Stanford (18-16) and Menlo College (43-3), Nov. 7 at Palo Alto, Calif. Starting at 174 pounds, the host Cardinal won three of the first four weights to lead 10-3 before the Wildcats’ Brandon Precin, ranked No. 2 at 125, defeated No. 17 Ryan Mango, 5-4. Northwestern also won three of the final four bouts and Jason Welch’s 11-3 major over Mike Kent gave the Cats an 18-13 lead.
18. Arizona State — The Sun Devils open their season Nov. 13 with two duals in different locations: at Grand Canyon College in Phoenix and Embry-Riddle in Prescott, Ariz. That will be followed by a Nov. 18 home dual with Oklahoma.
19t. Kent State — The Golden Flashes split two duals in Salem, Va., on Nov. 6, by defeated Chattanooga, 24-12, and losing to Iowa State, 23-19.
- — Against Chattanooga, both Nic Bedelyon (125), Brandonn Johnson (174) and Dustin Kilgore (197) all recorded major decisions. In the loss to ISU, the Flashes lost three of first four with the only win coming from Bedelyon, who recorded a 47-second fall. Kilgore, who is ranked No. 3 in WIN’s preseason poll at 184, moved up to 197.
19t. Lehigh — The Mountain Hawks blanked Drexel, 45-0, in the season opener, Nov. 5, for Lehigh’s first shutout since 2006. Sean Bilodeau (157) and Zach Rey (Hwt) each recorded falls for the Mountain Hawks.
19t. Virginia — The Cavaliers won 29 of 30 matches to beat Gardner Webb, 50-0, Anderson, 41-6, and Rider, 38-0, in the season and home openers, Nov. 7. Among the unbeaten Cavaliers was freshman Joe Spisak, who majored Rider’s Jimmy Kircher, 14-2, at 133 pounds.
22. NC State — Opens the season Nov. 14 in their Wolfpack Open
23. Binghamton — Opens the season, Nov. 14 in their Binghamton Open
24. Wyoming — Opens the season, Nov. 13 in their Cowboy Open
25. Nebraska — Opens the season, Nov. 21, in Columbus, Ohio, where they face both the host school Ohio State and Pittsburgh.
