Manville dominates and doubles at FILA Cadets
By Rob Sherrill
Bryce Steiert of Waverly-Shell Rock (Iowa) didn’t place in the FILA Cadet Nationals in freestyle at 69 kilos, but he accomplished something none of Mason Manville’s other 14 opponents did over the course of last week.
In the fourth round, Manville, the Blairstown Township (N.J.) Blair Academy sophomore, beat Steiert, 5-1, giving up the only point he allowed in becoming the only double champion in the FILA Cadet Nationals at Akron, Ohio.
Manville had a pair of pins and four technical falls in winning the Greco-Roman title with a 6-0 record, then opened the freestyle tournament with five technical falls in pool competition, along with the win over Steiert. He closed out the double with decisions of 8-0, 7-0 and 7-0.
While Manville sucked all the life out of his weight class, there was plenty of drama elsewhere. At 76 kg, Nick Reenan of Kingston (Pa.) Wyoming Seminary, who lost to Manville in the National Prep Championships final at 152, split a pair of one-point matches with fellow Cadet Nationals double champion Beau Breske of Hartford (Wisc.).
Reenan, the double champion last year at 152, edged Breske, the two-time state champion who doubled at 170 last year, 2-1 in the Greco-Roman final. Breske evened the score in the true second-place match in the freestyle meet, scoring a 4-3 victory. Four-time Minnesota champion Mark Hall of Apple Valley scored a 10-0 technical fall over Reenan in the fifth round of pool competition, and later won the title with a 4-1 win over Breske.
Two of the nation’s top 113 pounders met in the freestyle final at 54 kilos, with Daton Fix of Sand Springs (Okla.) Charles Page scoring the last point in a 1-1 victory over Nick Suriano of Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic. Fix got to the final with five technical falls and two seven-point decisions, while Suriano scored technical falls in all six pool matches.
Spencer Lee of Murrysville (Pa.) Franklin Regional, the nation’s best at the weight, repeated as freestyle champion at 50 kilos, with seven technical falls in seven matches. Cadet National Greco-Roman champion Joey Prata of Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher’s School scored the only point Lee allowed in an 11-1 finals loss.
Tim Young of East Aurora (Ill.) scored an upset in the Greco-Roman final at 85 kilos, a 13-4 technical fall over two-time Cadet National champion Samuel Shields-Colbray of Hermiston (Ore.). Not a state qualifier, Young rode a 14-9 opening win to a 5-0 record and the title. Ethan Andersen of Runnells (Iowa) Southeast Polk also turned some heads at 85-100 kilos, scoring a 4-2 victory over Jordan Wood of Boyertown (Pa.) in a battle of two of the nation’s best sophomore big men.
The 85-kilo class also provided some drama in freestyle, where Hunter Ritter of Bel Air (Md.) John Carroll emerged as the winner. Ritter beat Shields-Colbray, 10-7 for the title. In pool competition, Shields-Colbray prevailed over four-time Cadet National champion Lance Benick of Fridley (Minn.) Totino Grace, 7-1 in the third round, and Ritter beat defending Cadet national champion Tyler Johnson of Lockport (Ill.), 6-4 in round two on the other side.
