Fargo 2023: Junior Women’s Freestyle Highlights

FARGO, N.D. — The 2023 U.S. Marines 16U/Junior Nationals presented its first finals on Sunday when both the 16U and Junior Women’s divisions crowned champions in the Fargodome … and that included five young women who repeated as Junior champions in this week-long event.

The following are highlights of the Junior Women’s tournament:

• The five women who won a second straight Junior championship were Clare Booe (112) of Florida, Alexandra Szkotnicki (117) of Maryland, Cadence Diduch (132) of Illinois, Sabrina Nauss (180) of Michigan and Savannah Isaac (200) of Ohio. Booe, a former two-time Florida state champion at Palm Harbor and native of Tarpon Springs, will be a senior at Wyoming Prep in Kingston, Pa.  Szkotnicki is a graduate of South River High School, a native of Riva, Md., and will attend McKendree University in Illinois this fall. Diduch, a three-time Illinois state champ, will be a senior at Freeport High School. Nauss, the nation’s top-ranked wrestler at 180, will be a senior at Brighton High. Isaac, who won both a 16U and Junior championship in 2022, is a native of Toledo, Ohio, and will be a senior at Whitmer High School.

• Nauss was also named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler as she scored bonus-point victories in winning all five bouts, including a 1:36 pin against Cheyenne Ruiz of Utah in the finals.
• Illinois won the team championship by a 51-point margin over second-place California as the women from the Land of Lincoln featured one champion — Diduch — and nine All-Americans.
• Three states featured two champs each: California’s Eduarda Rodrigues (152) and Alysse Phillips (225), Maryland’s Szkotnicki (117) and Nebi Tsarni (144), and Florida’s Gabriele Tedesco (100) and Booe (112).
• Two women upset top seeds en route to claiming championships. Pennsylvania’s Aubre Krazer (122), ranked No. 6 nationally, dominated Indiana’s Rose Kaplan (ranked No. 5) 10-0 in the semis before beating Lexie Lopez 5-1 in the finals; Iowa’s Naomi Simon (164), ranked No. 5 nationally, also won by a 10-0 technical fall over top-seed and No. 8 Amarisa Manuel of Michigan in the semis before also dominating Alexandra Hofrichter of Wisconsin, 13-0, in the finals.
• Indiana’s Heather Crull, who pinned Illinois’ Harlee Hiller in the finals at 106 pounds, will now prepare to join the United States’ team that will compete in the U17 World Championships later this month in Turkey. Crull, a native of Richmond, Ind., will be a junior at Northeastern High School.
• Jaclyn Dehney, who represented Massachusetts, defeated Emily Sindoni of New York, 9-4, to win the 127-pound championship. Dehney is also actually a native of Pelham, N.Y., and a graduate of Central Catholic High School.
• A total of 853 women entered this year’s Junior Women’s Nationals, which ranks second only to the 2022 field that had 946 wrestlers.
