Semifinals (March 17 – 7 p.m.)
#1 Real Woods (Iowa) major dec. #4 Brock Hardy (Nebraska), 11-1 — Woods jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead with an early takedown and four nearfall count in his second NCAA semifinal. The first-year Hawkeye and transfer from Stanford added another takedown, two-point nearfall and a riding time point to clinch a bonus point victory and an NCAA final bid for Iowa.
#2 Andrew Alirez (Northern Colorado) dec. Beau Bartlett (Penn State), 6-2 — After already becoming the first NCAA finalist for Northern Colorado since 1969, Alirez used takedowns in the first and second periods plus an escape and riding time point to hand Penn State its first loss of the semifinal round.
Quarterfinals (March 17 – 11 a.m.)
#1 Real Woods (Iowa) major dec. #8 Allan Hart (Missouri), 9-0 — The Hawkeye scored the first of three takedowns midway through the first period, then added a two-point nearfall to lead 4-0 after one period. By scoring two more takedowns, one in each the second and third periods, Woods compiled a 3:18 riding time advantage.
#4 Brock Hardy (Nebraska) dec. #12 Parker Filius (Purdue), 7-0 – Hardy still has not surrendered a point to Filius after two meetings, as the Husker controlled the match from start to finish, scoring one takedown in each period to cruise to the semifinals.
#6 Beau Bartlett (Penn State) dec. #3 Cole Matthews (Pitt) 3-1 tb — In the first meeting between wrestlers of PA schools, the Nittany Lion scored the winning takedown with one second left in the second tiebreaker. This came after the Panther rode out Bartlett in the entire 30 seconds of a tiebreaker and Matthews chose neutral in his tiebreaker option.
#2 Andrew Alirez (Northern Colorado) dec. #10 Lachlan McNeil (No. Carolina), 6-4 – Giving Northern Colorado its first All-American since 2010, Alirez scored two early takedowns and fended off the Canadian native McNeil to earn his first All-American honor and a spot in tonight’s semifinal.
Second Round (March 16 – 6 p.m.)
- Iowa’s top-seed Real Woods overcame a late takedown attempt and a coach’s challenge to hold off Ohio State’s No. 17 Dylan D’Emilio, 7-5.Woods had jumped on top with two first-period takedowns before the Buckeye rallied to take a 5-4 lead on a takedown with 1:17 left in the second period.
- Pitt’s Cole Matthews, seeded No. 3, scored the bout’s only escape early in the third period to edge Northern Iowa’s No. 14 Cael Happel, 1-0.
- Purdue’s No. 12 seed Parker Filius scored a takedown in both the first and second periods to lead NC State’s No. 5 Ryan Jack, 5-1, then overcame a pair of takedowns in the third period by the Wolfpacker to win 7-6.
- Penn State’s No. 6 Beau Bartlett scored the bout’s only takedown in the second period and held on to beat South Dakota State’s No. 11 Clay Carlson 3-2.
- Missouri’s No. 8 Allan Hart rode out Oklahoma’s No. 9 Mosha Schwartz in a tiebreaker to give him a 30-second riding time advantage for the 2-2 criteria win.
- North Carolina’s No. 10 Lachlan McNeil built up a two minutes of riding time to beat Cornell’s No. 7 Vince Cornella.
- Northern Colorado’s No. 2 Andrew Alirez scored a takedown in each period and added a riding time point for an 8-5 win over Northwestern’s No. 18 Frankie Tal Shahar.
First Round (March 16 – 11 a.m. CDT)
There were only two lower-seeded wrestlers who won at this weight in the first round.
- Minnesota’s Jakob Bergeland, seeded 20th, “upset” Oklahoma State’s Carter Young, 5-0, on a takedown and reversal. But it should be pointed out that the Gopher placed seventh in the 2022 NCAAs.
- Northwestern’s No. 18 Frankie Tal Shahar beat No. 15 Tom Crook, a true freshman from Virginia Tech, 3-1 in overtime. The deciding takedown by the Wildcat came 29 seconds into sudden victory.
