Va Tech, Air Force & OU feature multiple newcomers in WIN Nov. 14 Rankings
NEWTON, Iowa — Three Virginia Tech wrestlers, including a pair of true freshmen in Tom Crook and Caleb Henson, are among 19 newcomers to WIN Magazine’s Nov. 14 NCAA Div. I Rankings and Tournament Power Index, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.
Crook, a native of Tampa, Fla., is rated No. 17 at 141 while Henson, from Cartersville, Ga., is rated No. 11 after the young Hokie upset Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso last weekend. The third Virginia Tech newcomer is redshirt freshman Eddie Ventresca, ranked No. 20 at 125 pounds.
Other schools with multiple newcomers to the weekly rankings include Air Force (Dylan Martinez, 14th at 149 and Sam Wolf, 20th at 174) and Oklahoma (Mosha Schwartz, 20th at 141 and Darrion Roberts, 17th at 174).
In WIN’s Tournament Power Index — which is a total of a team’s possible NCAA points associated with where their wrestlers finish — Penn State remained No. 1 with 97.5 points, while Iowa stayed at No. 2 with 75.5 points. Missouri, which features nine ranked wrestlers, moved up to No. 3 in WIN’s TPI with 60 points; just ahead of Cornell (56) and Arizona State (55.5).
The second group of teams includes Michigan (47), Minnesota (46), Ohio State (45.5; the Buckeyes also feature nine ranked wrestlers); Iowa State (41) and Oklahoma State (39).
The following is a point breakdown of the TPI, based on a wrestler’s ranking: 20 for 1st, 16 for 2nd, 13.5 for 3rd, 12.5 for 4th, 10 for 5th, 9 for 6th, 6.5 for 7th and 5.5 for 8th. Wrestlers ranked 9-12 earn two points each, followed by 1.5 points for wrestlers ranked 13-16 and 1 point for those ranked 17-20.
Penn State features four No. 1-ranked wrestlers: Roman Bravo-Young (133), Carter Starocci (174), Aaron Brooks (184) and Max Dean (197). The other top-ranked wrestlers are Iowa’s Spencer Lee (125), Pitt’s Cole Matthews (141), Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis (149), Princeton’s Quincy Monday (157), Missouri’s Keegan O’Toole (165) and Arizona State’s Cohlton Schultz (Hwt).
WIN will announce its first dual rankings in the Nov. 21 rankings release.
