Heavyweight Quarterfinals
#1 Gable Steveson (Minnesota) dec. #9 Lucas Davison (Northwestern), 10-5 – After surrendering a rare takedown, the returning NCAA champion and Olympic gold medalist responded with four takedowns of his own, an escape and a point for riding time to advance with a decision.
#4 Greg Kerkvliet (Penn State) dec. #12 Christian Lance (Nebraska), 7-1 – The Nittany Lion coasted to a 7-1 decision on the strength of two takedowns, a reversal and a riding time point to give Penn State its sixth semifinalist.
#6 Jordan Wood (Lehigh) dec. #3 Tony Cassioppi (Iowa), 3-1 sv — The MountainHawk score the bout’s only takedown with 49 seconds left in the overtime.
#2 Cohlton Schultz (Arizona State) dec. #7 Mason Parris (Michigan), 6-5 — The Sun Devil scored both of his two takedowns in the final 54 seconds to rally against the Wolverine, who led 3-1 entering the third frame with a first-period takedown and second period escape.
Heavyweight – Round 2 Notes
Nebraska’s Christian Lance, one of the eight wrestlers in the tournament who have been wrestling collegiately for at least seven seasons handed Air Force’s Wyatt Hendrickson his first loss of the season as the No. 12 Husker scored two takedowns in the final minute to edge the #5 Falcon, 5-4. Hendrickson was 26-0 on the season.
The top two seeds scored bonus points in their victories: #1 Gable Steveson scored a 23-8 technical fall over Missouri’s Zach Elam, while #2 Arizona State’s Cohlton Schultz pinned Cornell’s Lewis Fernandes in 52 seconds. It was the Sun Devil’s second pin of the tournament.
Northwestern’s #9 Lucas Davison defeated Central Michigan’s five-time MAC champion Matt Stencel 9-2.
Heavyweight – Round 1 Notes
Defending NCAA champ and Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson not only won his first-round bout but also scored bonus points with a 25-10 technical fall over Northern Iowa’s Tyler Gordon.
In fact, many of the returning All-Americans scored bonus points as Arizona State’s #2 Cohlton Schultz pinned Hofstra’s Zachary Knighton-Ward, Michigan’s #4 Mason Parris majored Penn’s Ben Goldin and Penn State’s Greg Kerkvliet pinned North Dakota State’s Brandon Metz.
