#8 Will Lewan (Michigan) dec. #17 Hunter Willits (Oregon State), 3-1 – The surprise semifinalist Wolverine scored a first-period takedown and held on for his first guaranteed All-American finish and semifinal berth.

#5 Quincy Monday (Princeton) dec. #4 Ed Scott (NC State), 5-3 – The Tiger advanced to the semis for the first time on the strength of first- and third-period takedowns and the avoidance of a powerful cement mixer attempt by the Wolfpack freshman.

#3 Jacori Teemer (Arizona State) dec. #6 Jared Franek (North Dakota State), 5-3 — The Sun Devil scored two takedowns; one with 57 seconds left in the first and a second with 52 seconds left in the second to give him a 4-2 lead.

#2 Ryan Deakin (Northwestern) dec. #7 Josh Humphreys (Lehigh), 6-1 — The Wildcat scored two takedowns, the second coming with 12 seconds in the second period, then rode out the MountainHawk the entire third period for a 2:28 riding time advantage.

157 pounds – Round 2 Notes

The first top-seeded wrestler to fall at the 2022 NCAA Championships was #1 David Carr (Iowa State), as the returning national champion was downed by #17 Hunter Willits (Oregon State) in a 2-1 tiebreaker. The Beaver first rode the Cyclone for 30 seconds then escaped with two seconds left in the second phase of the tiebreaker to pull off the upset of the tournament thus far. Willits joins his brother Grant and two other Beavers in the quarterfinals through the first five weights.

Michigan’s #8 Will Lewan scored a takedown in overtime Thursday, as he won his second consecutive match in the sudden victory period by taking down #9 Kaleb Young (Iowa).

157 pounds – Round 1 Notes

The opening round at 157 saw one defending champion — North Carolina’s Austin O’Connor — get upset while three top-10 seeds — #9 Kaleb Young (Iowa), #5 Quincy Monday (Princeton) and #3 Jacori Teemer (Arizona State) — advanced by 3-2 decisions.

A 1:01 riding time advantage by the Tar Heel — who captured the 149-pound title in 2021 before moving up to 157 — helped O’Connor force overtime before Dazion Casto of The Citadel took O’Connor to his back with 1:23 left in sudden victory for the 8-2 decision.

In a battle of Pennsylvania natives at 157, Iowa’s Kaleb Young triumphed over Penn’s Doug Zapf as the only takedown came in the second period by the Hawkeye.

Penn State’s Brady Berge lost 2-1 to Oregon State’s Hunter Willits as the deciding point came of a 1:13 riding time advantage.

Michigan’s No. 8 Will Lewan advanced with a 4-2 sudden victory decision over Missouri’s Jarrett Jacques, scoring the deciding takedown left in the overtime period.
