Meredith and Jack move up to No. 1 and 2 at 141 in WIN’s Jan. 8 rankings

NEWTON, Iowa — Wyoming’s Bryce Meredith and NC State’s Kevin Jack — both coming off victories over Oklahoma State’s two-time champ Dean Heil in the past two weeks — have moved to the top two spots, respectively, at 141 pounds in WIN’s Jan. 8 rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.
WIN’s latest rankings, based on results through Jan. 7, also included a pair of true freshmen wrestlers with the same last name — Penn State’s Nick Lee, 7th at 141 and Iowa’s Spencer Lee, 9th at 125 — as both finished high at the Southern Scuffle and Midlands, respectively.
Overall, Ohio State — with a wrestler ranked at all 10 weights, including nine rated in the Top 8 of their weight class — remained WIN’s No. 1-rated team in the Tournament Power Index with 125.5 TPI points.
The Buckeyes are followed by Southern Scuffle team champ Penn State (121.5 points), Michigan (78), Oklahoma State (67) and NC State (60.5). Iowa made the biggest jump to No. 6 with 59.5, followed by Missouri (48), Arizona State (43), Lehigh (41.5) and Virginia Tech (35.5).
WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI) awards teams points for individuals ranked in the respective weight classes based on how many potential All-Americans each school could produce at the 2018 NCAA Championships this March. WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
In WIN’s dual-team rankings, Penn State (5-0) remained No. 1, followed by Ohio State (8-0), Oklahoma State (6-0), Lehigh (6-1) and Michigan (5-1).
Among notable upcoming dual meets, seventh-ranked Iowa entertains No. 3 Oklahoma State, Jan. 14, and No. 5 Michigan, Jan. 27, while No. 2 Ohio State travels to No. 1 Penn State on Feb. 3.
