2015 NCAA Preview: 141 pounds

Many believe one of the top two prohibitive favorites of those wrestlers looking to repeat as champions is Ohio State senior Logan Stieber, who hopes to become just the fourth four-time NCAA champion.

The native of Monroeville, Ohio, won championships at 133 pounds in 2012 (against Oklahoma State’s Jordan Oliver) and 2013 (against Iowa’s Tony Ramos) before moving up to 141 last March. Last March he majored Virginia Tech’s Devin Carter for his third title. Entering the 2015 NCAAs, Stieber has captured both a fourth Las Vegas championship in December and a fourth Big Ten title. Overall, the Buckeye’s career record is 114-3 with 50 pins.

Carter, who overcame injuries in 2013-14 to reach last year’s NCAA final, is coming off an historic ACC tournament where the native of Christiansburg, Va., became the ninth all-time wrestler to claim four conference championships and just the third to do so at two different weight classes.

Edinboro senior Mitchell Port, who defeated Carter for the Midlands title, is also coming off a great Eastern Wrestling League tournament where the senior from Bellafonte, Pa., captured his third conference title and enters the NCAAs with a 32-1 mark this season. Port’s only loss this winter came against Stieber in the regionals of the National Duals. The Fighting Scot has earned two All-American honors, including a second-place finish in 2013 to Oklahoma’s Kendric Maple.

Minnesota’s Nick Dardanes finished seventh at 141 pounds in 2013 before moving up to 149 last year when he failed to place. The Gopher is coming off a third-place finish at the Big Tens, where he was upset by Iowa’s Josh Dziewa, who is looking to earn his first AA honor.

The MAC has a trio of strong All-American candidates in champion Zach Horan of Central Michigan, runner-up Chris Mecate of Old Dominion and Missouri’s Lavion Mayes.
