2020 MAC Championships
Missouri wins 9th straight MAC
Mid-American Conference, March 7-8, DeKalb, Ill.
2020 Nationally-Ranked Wrestlers / Top 8: MAC 19 / 4
2019 NCAA Qualifiers / Champs / All-Americans: MAC: 31/0/6;
EWL: 17/0/2
Team Race: Missouri has dominated the MAC and won every conference tournament since 2013 when the school left the Big 12 and joined the non-wrestling Southeastern Conference; sending Brian Smith’s squad to the MAC.
The Tigers return three champs — Brock Mauller (149), Jarrett Jacques (157) and Dylan Wisman (184) — but could be challenged by Central Michigan (which dominated the MAC before Missouri’s arrival) with two highly-ranked Chippewas in Drew Hildebrandt (125) and heavyweight Matt Stencel, a defending champ.
But the MAC nearly doubled in size as the six former Eastern Wrestling League teams joined the conference this winter. That includes 2019 EWL champ Lock Haven that features four EWL titlists, including Kyle Shoop, who is nationally ranked.
Top Individual Matchups: No weight has more highly-ranked talent than 157 pounds where Missouri’s returning champ Jacques is actually ranked lower than Rider’s Jesse Dellavecchia and Old Dominion’s Larry Early.
Meanwhile, Rider’s 2019 EWL champ Ethan Laird could face a formidable opponent in Clarion’s Greg Bulsak at 197.
