Penn State and Iowa remain top two teams in WIN’s Update Div. I Rankings

Oct. 11, 2019

NEWTON, Iowa — Penn State and Iowa remain the top two teams and are separated by 2.5 points in WIN Magazine’s Updated Preseason Tournament Power Index and Individual Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

These updated preseason rankings, as of Oct. 11, include changes and additions to WIN’s original preseason rankings. This includes Michigan’s four wrestlers, who participated in last year’s NCAA tournament and will take Olympic redshirts: All-Americans Stevan Micic (133 pounds), Logan Massa (165) and Myles Amine (174) and national qualifier Kanen Storr (141).

Another big change in the individual rankings that affected the top two teams was the addition of Penn State’s Roman Bravo-Young, the returning All-American (8th at 133) who was omitted in WIN’s initial preseason poll in September. The addition of his ranking points jumped Penn State over Iowa in this early October TPI.

Penn State now leads in WIN Tournament Power Index with 109 points. The Nittany Lions feature nine ranked wrestlers, six rated in the Top 8 of their weight class, including former NCAA champions Vincenzo Joseph (165), Mark Hall (174) and heavyweight Anthony Cassar, who are ranked No. 1 in WIN’s preseason poll.

Iowa is ranked second with 106.5 points. That Hawkeyes also feature nine ranked wrestlers and eight in the Top 8 and two-time defending national champion Spencer Lee at 125 pounds.

The remaining Top 5 teams are Wisconsin (55.5), Nebraska (52.5) and Arizona State (42.5).

Other returning past national champions include Seth Gross (133), who transferred from South Dakota State to Wisconsin, and Arizona State’s two-time NCAA champ Zahid Valencia (184).

WIN’s Tournament Power Index is a prediction of accumulated NCAA points of ranked wrestlers on a respective team associated to where they might place at the 2020 NCAA Championships, March 19-21, in Minneapolis, Minn.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
