Mauller & Dean rise in WIN rankings, which previews Iowa vs. Oklahoma State

By
Updated: February 18, 2019

NEWTON, Iowa — Missouri’s Nick Mauller and Cornell’s Max Dean scored big victories last weekend to make big jumps at 149 and 184 pounds, respectively, in WIN Magazine’s Feb. 18, 2019 NCAA Division I Rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.

Both ranked ninth a week ago, each wrestler upset a higher-ranked foe — Oklahoma State’s Kaden Gfeller, then No. 4, and Virginia Tech’s No. 3 Zack Zavatsky, respectively — and have moved up to No. 5 and 6 in their respective weight classes.

While undefeated Penn State (13-0) remains No. 1 in both WIN’s Tournament Power Index (with 123 points) and dual rankings, only five points separate the next three teams in this week’s TPI: Oklahoma State (78), Ohio State (77.5) and Iowa (73).

This upcoming weekend will be the final regular-season duals for Division I teams; highlighted by the Feb. 24 dual meeting in Stillwater, Okla., between the Cowboys and Hawkeyes, who are both undefeated. Both teams feature eight ranked wrestlers, including five in the Top 8 of their weight classes.

This weekend’s dual will feature two meetings between wrestlers ranked in the top three of their weight classes: at 125 pounds where Iowa’s No. 2 Spencer Lee faces OSU’s No. 3 Nick Piccininni; and at 133 pounds, where OSU’s No. 2 Daton Fix will take on Iowa’s No. 3 Austin DeSanto.

WIN’s weekly individual rankings are a prediction of final NCAA tournament placements at the 2019 NCAA Championships, March 21-23 in Pittsburgh, and based on each wrestler’s full season of competition up until each week’s release. WIN’s Tournament Power Index is a total of the TPI points that all the wrestlers on a respective team have earned based on their ranking. A team’s TPI points and TPI ranking is a predictionof a where a team might finish at the national tournament at this point in the season with their current line-up.

WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
