Gehloff and Manville go bigger in winning Greco and double Fargo honors

FARGO, N.D. — Mason Gehloff and Carson Manville were the only two wrestlers who had a chance to capture U.S. Marines Cadet National championships in both styles before the start of the Greco-Roman championships began Thursday afternoon.

And they both succeeded … but only after the double winners proved they could do so by moving up a weight.

Gehloff, a sophomore at Waseca (Minn.) High School, who won a Cadet freestyle national championship on Monday at 88 pounds, moved up to 94 pounds in Greco on Thursday when he rallied to beat Kai Owen of Florida, 11-7, in the Greco final.

With that victory — thanks to a four-point throw with eight seconds left — Gehloff was named Outstanding Wrestler in the Cadet Greco tournament. He also earned Triple Crown honors as these two Fargo championships were added to the Cadet Folkstyle championship he earned in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in April.

“I wanted that win. I tried to go 100 percent. The match isn’t over until the whistle blows,” said Gehloff, who also scored on a similar four-point throw in the final ten seconds of his 8-7 semifinal victory over fellow Cadet freestyle champion Maxximus Martinez of California. “(Winning a Triple Crown) is awesome. The Greco championship probably means more because I went up a weight class.”

Wrestling bigger guys was nothing new Gehloff, who was forced to gain weight several times this past winter to make the minimum weight of 92 pounds in order to compete at 106 pounds for Waseca High School where he finished 35-14.

Manville, meanwhile, became the 16^th all-time wrestler to win both Cadet freestyle and Greco-Roman championships in consecutive years. Earlier this week, the sophomore from Wyoming Seminary in Pennsylvania, won the Cadet freestyle title at 145 pounds, then moved up to 152 pounds in Greco where he defeated Camdyn Ingram of Louisiana, 7-1, in the final. This also came two weeks after representing the United States at the UWW World Greco-Roman championships in Croatia.

“I know I’m going to be at this weight for college some day so I figured I’d start with this,” said Manville, who won his first Cadet national titles a year ago at 132 pounds while representing the state of Minnesota. “Now that I’ve won four, I have to go and win more.”

Illinois won the team championship with 85 points as three wrestlers captured titles: 160-pound Adrien Cramer of Grayslake, Ill., who pinned Brayden Randolph of Michigan in what his tournament high ninth fall of the two-day event; and brothers Damien and Fabian Lopez of DeKalb, Ill, who were named co-champions at 132 pounds.

The states of Washington and Pennsylvania, which finished second and third respectively with 56 and 47 points, also each had three champs. For Washington, that included 100-pound Kenndyl Mobley, 120-pound Haiden Drury and 220-pound Braxton Mikesell. The three champs from the Keystone state were 106-pound Sheldon Seymour, who trailed 6-0 before pinning Kenneth Crosby of Colorado, Manville and Kolby Franklin at 195 pounds.

Franklin’s 14-4 technical fall over Brandon Hoselton of Illinois helped him avenge a Cadet Greco finals loss a year ago. Also overcoming a 2017 finals loss was 182-pound Tyler Hannah of Wisconsin.

The 48^th annual event will conclude Friday when the Junior Greco-Roman tournament will be decided with the finals beginning at 2 p.m. CDT.
