Martinez, Coon new No. 1s in WIN’s Feb. 12 Rankings

NEWTON, Iowa — Illinois’ Isaiah Martinez and Michigan’s Adam Coon earned the top spots at 165 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, in WIN’s Feb. 12 Rankings and Tournament Power Index.
Martinez, the two-time NCAA champ, moved from No. 2 to No. 1 after Iowa’s Alex Marinelli upset the defending NCAA champion Vincenzo Joseph, 9-8, on Feb. 10. The Hawkeye, who was ranked No. 4, jumped up to No. 2, just ahead of No. 3 Joseph.
Coon, the two-time All-American who redshirted a year ago, defeated Ohio State’s two-time NCAA champion Kyle Snyder, 3-1, in a dual meet between the Big Ten schools on Feb. 11.
In WIN’s team rankings, Penn State and Ohio State remained the top two teams in both the Dual Rankings and Tournament Power Index after securing dual wins over Iowa and Michigan, respectively, last weekend.
The undefeated Nittany Lions (13-0) and winners of the last three NCAAs still feature three No. 1-ranked wrestlers — Zain Retherford (149), Jason Nolf (157) and Bo Nickal (184) among the team’s eight Top 8-ranked wrestlers, which earned PSU 120 TPI points. All 10 Buckeyes are ranked, including top-rated Kollin Moore (197) and eight other Top 8-ranked wrestlers, which earned the Buckeyes 115.5 points.
WIN’s Tournament Power Index (TPI) awards team points for individuals ranked in the respective weight classes based on how many potential All-Americans each school could produce at the 2018 NCAA Championships this March. WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down by the following individual rankings: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
The other top-ranked wrestlers are Rutgers’ Nick Suriano (125), South Dakota State’s Seth Gross (133), Wyoming’s Bryce Meredith (141) and Arizona State’s Zahid Valencia (174).
