WIN’s Feb 13 Ranks Preview NWCA Nationals Championship Series

By
Updated: February 13, 2017

NEWTON, Iowa — The National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals Championship Series is set for this weekend with Penn State and Oklahoma State — both undefeated and ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in WIN’s Feb. 13 rankings — set to meet this Sunday, Feb. 19, at 4 p.m., in Stillwater, Okla.

The rest of the match-ups in this year’s NWCA National Duals — which features the top eight Big Ten Conference teams traveling to highly-ranked non-Big Ten schools — are as follows with this week’s WIN dual rankings:

Friday, February 17

#11 Rutgers at #12 Lehigh, 7 p.m.

#16 Michigan at #7 NC State, 7 p.m.

Purdue at #14 South Dakota State, 8 p.m.

Saturday, February 18

#3 Iowa at Edinboro, 7 p.m.

Sunday, February 19

#4 Ohio State at #8 Cornell, 1 p.m.

#2 Penn State at #1 Oklahoma State, 4 p.m.

Indiana at #20 Appalachian State, 3 p.m.

#6 Nebraska at #5 Virginia Tech, 7 p.m.

In WIN’s Feb. 13 Tournament Power Index, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic, which predicts how teams will finish in this year’s NCAA Division I Championships, held March 16-18 in St. Louis, defending champion Penn State was ranked No. 1 with 103.5 TPI points, compared to 86.5 TPI points by Oklahoma State. Just behind the Cowboys are Ohio State (82.5) and Iowa (79.5).

The following is a closer look between the match-up between Penn State and Oklahoma State and where each school’s wrestler (per weight) is ranked. PSU’s starter at 133 pounds could be unranked George Carpenter or Triston Law.

Penn State Weight Oklahoma State
#2 Nick Suriano 125 pounds #11 Nick Piccininni
133 pounds #5 Kaid Brock
#13 Jimmy Gulibon 141 pounds #1 Dean Heil
#1 Zain Retherford 149 pounds #2 Anthony Collica
#1 Jason Nolf 157 pounds #6 Joe Smith
#4 Vincenzo Joseph 165 pounds #9 Chandler Rogers
#6 Mark Hall 174 pounds #8 Kyle Crutchmer
#2 Bo Nickal 184 pounds #4 Nolan Boyd
#9 Matt McCutcheon 197 pounds #8 Preston Weigel
#5 Nick Nevills Heavyweight #6 Austin Schafer

WIN’s TPI point totals are based on how individuals will also place in this year’s NCAAs: 1st – 20 (16 All-American points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
