Penn State takes over top spot in WIN’s Jan. 23 TPI

NEWTON, Iowa — Penn State not only won a big dual meet at Iowa last Friday but the Nittany Lions have taken over the top sport in the Tournament Power Index of WIN’s Jan. 23 rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.
With nine ranked wrestlers, including six ranked in the Top 8 of their weight class, the Nittany Lions have earned 95.5 TPI points in this week’s tournament rankings, just five points more than No. 2 Oklahoma State (90.5), which features ten ranked wrestlers and eight in the Top 8.
WIN’s TPI point totals are based on how individuals of each team are projected to finish in the 2017 NCAA Championships, March 16-18, in St. Louis, with Top-8 finishers (All-Americans) given the following points: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma State (8-0) held onto the top spot in WIN’s Dual Team rankings after beating South Dakota State last weekend, while Penn State (8-0) and Ohio State (8-0) are ranked second and third, respectively, in the dual rankings.
Ohio State, which moved up to No. 3 in the TPI rankings, is scheduled to face the Hawkeyes this Friday in Iowa City, then will travel a week later to take on Penn State in a Feb. 3 dual. Neither Penn State nor Ohio State are scheduled to meet Oklahoma State in a regular-season dual but either the Lions or Buckeyes could meet the Cowboys in the NWCA Championship Dual Series, Feb. 19, when the top eight Big Ten teams will face the top schools from the other Division I conferences.
