Illinois wins both Cadet and Junior Greco; Four still in hunt for Triple Crown as freestyle begins in Fargo

FARGO, N.D. — The 2014 Cadet and Junior Nationals hit the halfway mark in the Fargodome on Tuesday as the Greco-Roman tournaments wrapped up with the state of Illinois capturing team titles in both age groups.

But the young men from the Land of Lincoln enjoyed just two individual champions and those came in the Cadet tournament where Trey Keeley won the 88-pound title and Austin Gomez rallied to defend his Cadet championship at 113 pounds.

The team from New York celebrated winning three Junior Greco championships, including one by William Koll, the son of Cornell head coach Rob Koll and grandson of the late Hall of Famer Bill Koll from the University of Northern Iowa.

Four wrestlers remained alive to win Triple Crown championships: Jaden Enriguez (126) of Tulare, Calif., 170-pound Beau Breske of Hartford, Wisc., on the Cadet level and a pair of lightweight Junior wrestlers: Randon Miranda (100) of Palmcale, Calif., and 106-pound Danny Vega from Tucson, Ariz.

Freestyle begins on the Cadet level on Wednesday with the Junior wrestlers beginning that style on Thursday. Championship matches will be held Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

2014 Cadet Greco Finals Highlights

88 — Trey Keeley (Illinois) dec. over Patrick McKee (Minnesota), 12-8

A front headlock for points with 30 seconds left helped the junior-to-be at Washington High School clinch the championship. Keeley actually led 7-0 before McKee of St. Michael-Albertville High School cut the margin to 8-6 with 1:17 left.

94 — Nicolas Aguilar (California) dec. Brandon Meikel (Utah), 7-2

The wrestler from Gilroy High School led 4-0 before holding on to the victory over the sophomore from Kearnes High School in Morgan, Utah.
100 — Roman Bravo-Young (Arizona) pinned Dominic Lajoie (Michigan), 4:56

After Lajoie, who won a Michigan state championship for Gaylord High School, cut Bravo-Young’s lead to 4-3, the native of Tucson, Ariz, caught his foe in a headlock for the winning pin.
106 — Ian Timmins (Nevada) pinned Drew West (Iowa), 3:35

Timmins, a state champion from Wooster High School, trailed West, 5-0 but fought back with a five-point throw to lead 7-5 and eventually scored the fall when he countered a throw attempt by the Iowan.

113 — Austin Gomez (Illinois) won by TF over Bryce West (Iowa), 18-8

After a passivity call against the native of Carol Stream, Ill, tied the match at 8-8, Gomez clinched a second straight Cadet Greco title by using a pair of throws in the final minute for the technical fall.
120 — Coltan Williams (Texas) dec. Wilson Smith (North Carolina), 8-5

Williams, coming off a Texas state championship at Hebron High School with a 31-0 record, clinched the title by scoring the final four points.

126 — Jaden Enriquez (California) dec. Quentin Hovis (Arizona), 6-2

In a battle of third-place finishers from 2013, Enriquez led 6-0 and remained alive to earn a Triple Crown.

132 — Jake Allar (Minnesota) pinned Jaron Chavez (Idaho), 5:04

Allar, a native of Corcoran, Minn., trailed 12-6 before he caught the younger brother of Jon Jay Chavez in a headlock and eventually scored the fall.
138 — Ethan Karsten (Missouri) dec. Devin Bahr (Wisconsin), 8-3

A four-point move by Karsten with one minute left in the first period gave the Platte County High School junior a victory over the Folkstyle national champion from West Salem High School.
145 — Matthew Park (Idaho) pinned Logan Gruszka (Illinois), 0:57

Park, an Idaho state champ from Centennial High School, was leading 6-4 when he eventually scored the fall.
152 — Riley Jaramillo (Oregon) won by TF over Anthony Sherry (Iowa), 11-0

Jaramillo, who finished sixth in the Oregon state tournament for Churchill High School, had no trouble against the freshman at Glenwood High.

160 — Owen Webster (Minnesota) won by TF over James Handwerk (Ohio), 10-0

Webster, from Shakopee, celebrated a banner year that also saw him win a Minnesota state championship as a sophomore this past winter.
170 — Beau Breske (Wisconsin) won by TF over Kamal Bey (Illinois), 10-0

Breske, from Hartford, Wisc., remained alive for the Triple Crown when the 2013 Cadet national champ dominated Bey, the state champ from Oak Park, who moved up a weight to face Breske.
182 — Keegan Moore (Minnesota) dec. Wyatt Koelling (Utah), 6-5

Moore, who won a Minnesota state title for Jackson County as a sophomore, clinched the victory with late takedown.

195 — Matt Stencel (Ohio) pinned Wyatt Harden (Michigan), 0:58

Stencel, from Oregon Clay High School, pinned all his foes at this weight class in the first round.

220 — Brandon Metz (North Dakota) pinned Allen Stallings (Illinois), 5:26

Metz, who lives just a few miles from the Fargodome in West Fargo, was actually trailing 4-3 when he took Stallings down to his back and earned the fall.
Hwt — Kevin Vough (Ohio) dec. Osawaru Odighizuwa (Oregon), 8-1

Vough, who finished third this past winter for Elyria High School, stayed in good position and dominated the 220-pound Oregon state champion from Douglas High School

2014 Junior Greco Finals Highlights

100 — Randon Miranda (California) won by TF over Zack Murillo (Connecticut), 14-4

Miranda, a state qualifier from Quartz Hill High School, remained alive for the Junior Triple crown by scoring the final seven points.

106 — Danny Vega (Arizona) dec. Todd Small (Georgia), 7-2

Vega actually trailed 4-0 on the scoreboard in the first period before a call was reversed. That momentum helped the Junior folkstyle national champion remain alive for the Triple Crown when he scored a pair of takedowns in the second period.

113 — Dorian Sapien (Idaho) dec. Corbin Nirschl (Kansas), 12-6

An effective arm spin and a late four-point move by the junior from Borah High School helped him rally from a 2-1 deficit.
120 — Skyler Petry (Minnesota) dec. Anthony Cefolo (New Jersey), 2-1

A first-period takedown by the Waterville, Minn., native held up for the winning margin against the New Jersey State champion from Hanover High School.

126 — Taylor LaMont (Utah) dec. Kegan Calkins (Illinois), 7-2

The younger brother of Grant LaMont maintained his family’s domination of this style thanks to a five-point throw off a reverse lift helped him overcome a 2-0 deficit.

132 — William Koll (New York) won by TF over William Kui (New Jersey), 11-0

The match lasted just 49 seconds before the son of Cornell head coach Rob Koll scored the easy win against the New Jersey state qualifier.

138 — Blake Clevenger (Missouri) dec. Rudy Guillen (Georgia), 8-1

Clevenger, who finished second in the 2013 Junior Greco finals, led 2-1 after the first period before the Kearney High prep scored the final six points on a pair of pushouts and two more takedowns.

145 — Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer (New York) won by TF over Sir Romeo Howard (Illinois), 16-5

The future Iowa State wrestler used a four-point throw to end the match with 1:38 left in the bout, but it was his duck-under earlier in the second period that was even more impressive.

152 — Brooks Robinson (Utah) pinned Nick Tarpley (Colorado), 2:09

Down 4-0, the native of Mapleton, Utah, scored 10 straight points before catching Tarpley on his back for the fall.

160 — Burke Paddock (New York) won by TF over Jake Deutschlander (Minnesota), 10-0

The future Iowa Hawkeye needed just two minutes to dominate the native of Carver, Minn.

170 — Jon Jay Chavez (Idaho) won by TF over Chandler Rogers (Oklahoma), 10-0

Chavez proved why he was named the Junior Greco Wrestler of the Year when he led 2-0 before elevating and throwing the future Oklahoma State wrestler for a five-point move and eventually the technical fall.

182 — Justan Rivera (Georgia) dec. Andrew Kowal (Ohio), 4-2

With his state teammates cheering “Georgia, Georgia” from the Fargodome stands, the three-time state champion from Kennesaw High School trailed 2-0 before he caught Kowal on his back with 1:30 left in the bout.
195 — Samuel Colbray (Oregon) dec. Joel Dixon (Oklahoma), 8-0

Colbray, a two-time Cadet Greco champ, proved he could handle the Junior level, by scoring all his points in the second period.

220 — Roy Nash (Utah) dec. Tyler Schmidt (Wisconsin), 13-8

In a rematch of the 2013 Junior Greco final, the future Utah Valley collegian trailed Schmidt, 5-4 before scoring four takedowns.

Hwt — Sam Stoll (Minnesota) dec. Adarios Jones (Illinois), 2-0

Stoll, a 2013 runner-up in Junior Greco, needed just a first-period takedown to defeat the 2014 Junior Folkstyle champion.
