2013 ASICS JUNIOR & CADET NATIONALS PREVIEW: 182-HWT

Editor’s Note: WIN’s high school columnist Rob Sherrill is continuing his weight-by-weight preview of the ASICS Junior/Cadet Nationals, which will be held July 13-20 in Fargo, N.D.  Finishing up our Cadet and Junior Nationals preview this week: the upper weights – 182, 195, 220 and 285 pounds. Here are a few of the standouts to date, regional by regional.

182 pounds

Double regional champions

Cadet – Keegan Moore, Jackson (Minn.) County Central (Southern Plains); Michael Rogers, Spring Mills (Pa.) Penns Valley (Phil Portuese Northeast)

Junior – Jacob Stilling, Elkhorn (Wis.) (Northern Plains)

Highlights – Two-time state champion Stilling, the Division 1 state champion this year at 170, met the 182-pound champion, Aaron Rothwell of Sheboygan North, in the Greco-Roman pool final, scoring a 5-0, 0-5, 1-0 victory en route to the title. It was the only lost period in either meet for Stilling, who went 5-0 in each style with five pins and two technical falls overall. Moore and Rogers were both unscored upon in Greco-Roman.

195 pounds

Double regional champions

Cadet – Roderick Davis, Atlanta (Ga.) Holy Innocents Episcopal School (Southeast); Samuel Shields-Colbray, Hermiston (Ore.) (Northwest)

Highlights – Both wrestlers posted identical 4-0 records in each style en route to their titles. Cadet National champion Colbray had to survive a three-period Greco-Roman final, eventually scoring his third pin of the tournament. He had five pins and three technical falls.

220 pounds

Double regional champions

Cadet – Shane Coombs, Strasburg (Colo.) (Southern Plains); James Ford, Worthington (Ohio) Thomas Worthington (Central); Dallas Goodpaster, Brush Prairie (Wash.) Prairie (Northwest); Michael Smith, Owings Mills (Md.) McDonogh School (Phil Portuese Northeast)

Junior – Roy Nash, Murray (Utah) Taylorsville (West); Matt Voss, Puyallup (Wash.) (Northwest)

Highlights – Big-class state champions Nash and Voss, both juniors, went 6-0 and 7-0 overall, respectively. Nash was scored upon only by two-time Arizona champion Ben Andrew of Mesa in an 8-3, 6-5 freestyle finals win. None of Voss’s four Greco-Roman matches went the distance.

 285 pounds

Double regional champions

Cadet – Collin Braun, Warrensburg (Mo.) (Southern Plains); George Humphreys, Marietta (Ga.) Walton (Southeast)

Junior – Dane Drimmer, Parker (Colo.) Chaparral (Southern Plains); Newton Smerchek, Luxemburg (Wis.) L.-Casco (Central, Northern Plains)

Highlights – The only wrestler to win double titles in two regionals this year, Smerchek, part of a loaded heavyweight class in Wisconsin this year, posted 3-0 Greco-Roman records and 4-0 freestyle records at each regional. His 14 victories included eight pins. Braun didn’t allow a point in going 4-0 in each style, racking up six pins and two technical falls.
