Garrett, Brunson take over top spots in WIN’s Jan. 11 rankings

NEWTON, Iowa — Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett and Illinois’ Zac Brunson have taken over the top spots at 133 and 174 pounds, respectively, to highlight WIN’s Jan. 11 rankings, presented by Cliff Keen Athletic.
The reason for these two wrestlers ascension in their weight classes came after last week’s No. 1-ranked wrestlers — Iowa’s Cory Clark at 133 and Penn State’s Bo Nickal at 174 — lost bouts last weekend against Illinois’ Zane Richards and Indiana’s Nate Jackson, respectively.
Despite those setbacks, Penn State and Iowa remained No. 1 and No. 3 in this week’s Tournament Power Index. Oklahoma State, which also maintained its No. 2 TPI ranking, lost 133-pound Kaid Brock for the season because of a knee injury, but welcomes true freshman Joe Smith to No. 7 in this week’s rankings at 157 pounds after the Big 12 school decided to take the redshirt off the young Cowboy.
WIN’s TPI points are based on where the teams’ individuals are projected — based on WIN’s individual rankings — to finish in this season’s NCAA Championships, March 17-19, in New York City, with Top-8 finishers earning All-American points.
WIN’s TPI point totals are broken down as follows: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12.5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5). Additional points for other rankings include: 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1. TPI points will be lower than the final actual NCAA tournament points because it does not include bonus points.
Penn State and Iowa also remained the top two schools in WIN’s dual-team rankings, while Missouri moved to No. 3 with a victory over Cornell on Sunday. Among other notable changes in the dual ranks saw Michigan move from No. 13 to No. 9 after the Wolverines defeated Ohio State, 21-11, in Columbus last Saturday.
