Moore leads Iowa City West past Waverly Shell Rock

By Rob Sherrill, W.I.N. High School Editor

He’s had a great season … but then, those have happened before.

What’s been a dream season for Iowa City (Iowa) West High junior Nate Moore ended just the way he wanted it to with his first state championship.

Moore (46-0) followed up a pair of first-period pins with a pair of major decisions to win the Class 3A state title at 125. He sealed the deal with a 15-7 title-match victory over Anthony Baccam of Marshalltown High.

Moore could pick up three more victories Saturday as the Trojans try to repeat as double state champions and add the state duals title to their collection.

Iowa City West trailed arch-rival Waverly-Shell Rock High for much of the tournament, and still found itself down by three points entering the finals. But their individual power, with Moore providing the spark, was more than enough to settle the issue.

Moore’s freshman brother, Nick (130) and sophomore Derek St. John (135) made it three consecutive titles to give West the lead, and junior Grant Gambrall (171) made it four individual champions.

The loaded 119-pound weight class went to Nate Moore’s Cadet Nationals rival, fellow junior Matt McDonough of Marion Linn-Mar High, who won his second state title by edging Iowa State recruit Tyler Clark of Bettendorf High, 4-3. Clark’s teammate and another former Illinois state champion, Iowa recruit Jordan Johnson, was upset, 3-2, in the semifinals by Indianola High’s Alex Petersen and finished third. Johnson had broken his thumb a month before the state tournament.

Jimmy Waters (189) of Council Bluffs Lewis Central High closed his wrestling career by winning his third state title. Among his victories was a 9-2 decision over Iowa recruit Brodie Ambrose of Eldridge North Scott High in the quarterfinals. Waters will attend the University of Kansas next year on a baseball scholarship. Northwestern recruit and Junior National champion Robert Kellogg (160) of Sioux City North High also won.

Class AA: With junior Andrew Long (112) winning his second state title, Creston/Orient-Macksburg High easily won its first team title, 112-79 over Ballard Huxley High. Defending champions met in the 125-pound final, with Monona High’s Kyle Pedretti prevailing over J.J. Krutsinger of Waterloo Columbus High, 6-5, in the overtime tie-breaker. Saydel High’s T.J. Moen (145) also repeated.

Class A: It was all Gilbertville Don Bosco High, all the time. With freshman Cole Welter (103) and sophomore Bart Reiter (112) winning titles, the Dons nearly doubled runnerup Bode Twin River Valley High, 144-76.

Malo’s season log: 54-0, 52 pins

It was a long time coming, but senior Ryan Malo of Danvers (Mass.) St. John's Preparatory School finally has an All-State championship on his resume.

Malo, a three-time state placewinner, pinned Lawrence Central Catholic High's Mike Leavitt in the second period to win the 189-pound title — his 52nd fall in 54 matches this season — after building an 8-0 lead. A year ago, Malo placed fourth in the All-State tournament and fifth in the New England championships.

Lowell High, Massachusetts’ Division 1 powerhouse, advanced four to the finals to lead all schools and came away with two champions, Sean Boyle (112) and Phil Gauthier (171). Boyle, a sophomore, was the National Prep Championships runner-up at 103 last season while wrestling at Windsor (Conn.) Loomis-Chaffee School with older brother Casey, a former four-time Division 1 state champion. Boyle shut out former All-State champion Jose Cabrera of Springfield Central High 7-0 in the final and was voted the Outstanding Wrestler in the lower weights.

The upper-weight OW went to Plymouth South High’s Vinnie Renaut, who edged Ronnie Tetreault of Ludlow High 3-2 in the 152-pound final.

Some New England hopefuls also impressed in the lower weights: juniors Ken Anderson (103) of Billerica Memorial High and John Sughrue (125) of Methuen High and seniors John Coutoumas (119) of Waltham High, Tim Rich (130) of Chelmsford High and Craig Carpenter (135) of Boston Catholic Memorial High, who shared the OW a year ago.

Franklin High also had two champions: Ryan Donovan (145) and Matt Sidebottom (285).
