Luma, Fava score upsets in New Jersey All-Star event
By Rob Sherrill, W.I.N. High School Editor In its five-year history, the New Jersey Coaches All-Star Invitational has become a ground-breaking and exciting event. Modeled after the NWCA All-Star Meet at the collegiate level, the dual meet is an individual showcase matching many of the stars from New Jersey’s state tournament high schools. Proceeds from the event, organized by Jackson Memorial High coach Scott Goodale, are contributed to the Dan Galorenzo Scholarship Fundec. Over 2,500 spectators comprised a packed house at Brick Memorial High in central New Jersey Sunday to witness a dual meet that included six wrestlers ranked No. 1 in the state at their respective weight classes, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. The six competed in the final five bouts of the match, with five emerging victorious. One of the bouts featured the state’s top two big men Lehigh recruit Zack Rey (285) of Hopatcong High against the top-ranked 215-pounder, Roy Dragon of Bridgewater-Raritan High. State champion Rey emerged victorious in a tight 3-0 match that saw him counter Dragon, third in the state last year, for the match’s only takedown in the final five seconds. The first of the top-ranked wrestlers to take the mat was Luke Lanno (145) of Manahawkin Southern Regional High. In the first of back-to-back bouts featuring a No. 1 vs. No. 2 match-up, Lanno had no trouble with Hackettstown High’s Cory Vernon, scoring an 11-2 major decision. Junior Scott Winston (152) of Jackson, unbeaten in his high school career, followed with a 9-5 victory over Frankie McLaughlin of Belle Mead Hillsborough High. Newton Kittatinny High senior Tom Spellman, ranked No. 1 at 171, moved up a weight to 189 and edged Nick Tenpenny of Bayville Central Regional High, ranked No. 4, 3-2. Double Junior National finalist Fred Santaite of Allendale Northern Highlands High closed the meet with a 3-1 victory over senior state placewinner Pat Strizki of Flemington Hunterdon Central High. And there was excitement: four overtime bouts, a thriller at 140 pounds and back-to-back stunning upsets at 125 and 135. At 125, sophomore Anthony Luma of Egg Harbor High brought the crowd to its feet first, scoring an overtime takedown for a 6-4 victory over three-time state placewinner John Trumbetti of Montvale St. Joseph Regional High. The loss prevented Trumbetti from becoming the second wrestler to win the event four times. At 135, Dale Fava of West Orange Don Bosco Preparatory High, who finished third in state a year ago but had fallen out of the rankings this season, made sure his name was back in the headlines with a 6-3 victory over Virginia Tech recruit Nick Murray of Bound Brook High, ranked No. 2.
