Carl Sandburg, Jackson win dual showdowns
By Rob Sherrill, W.I.N. High School Editor
Three teams prominent in The Clash National Duals got it on in big dual meets over the weekend.
At Orland Park, Ill., host Carl Sandburg High bumped 171-pounder John Doyle up to 189 in the meet’s first match, got a 4-2 victory and never trailed as they went on to beat Carol Stream Glenbard North High, 34-21, in a match that saw both coaches try some lineup switches in a potential state-tournament preview.
Both teams are 23-2.
Chris Van Gundy tied the score for Glenbard North by beating Frank Pereiro, 6-2, at 215, but senior state place-winner Eric Rettke gave Carl Sandburg the lead for good with a 5-1 victory over Alex Hansen. A technical fall by Junior National runner-up Jon Morrison (103) and a pin by Miguel Guerrero (112) swelled Carl Sandburg’s lead to 17-3.
Glenbard North used a lineup switch similar to the one that paid dividends in its 26-22 victory at Wisconsin Rapids (Wis.) Lincoln High the previous week. Top-ranked Tony Ramos, the first of six Panthers to be moved up a weight, scored a pin at 119 to make it 17-9. But Carl Sandburg’s Kevin White (125) came back with a huge win, 3-1 over Ironman place-winner Jimmy Chase, that made it 20-9.
State qualifier Geno Capezio eked out a 3-2 victory at 130 that made it 21-12 before three consecutive Sandburg wins put it out of reach. State champion Conrad Polz (140) showed that he is recovered from a shoulder injury sustained in the Al Dvorak Memorial Invitational finals, following a Jake Holler victory at 135 with a 12-4 major decision over state qualifier Danny Monaco. When Virginia Tech Matt Cusick outlasted two-time state placewinner Vince Ramos 3-1 at 145, the Eagles had a virtually insurmountable 30-12 lead with three matches remaining.
Glenbard North won two of the final three matches, getting a pin from Northern Illinois recruit Bryan O’Connor (152) and state qualifier Roy Feltson’s 3-1 overtime victory over the state’s top-ranked 160-pounder, Eric Pretto, in the final match at 171. Those wins were sandwiched around Nick Soraghan’s clinching major decision at 160.

Jackson races past Camden Catholic
While Carl Sandburg ruled the day Saturday, Jackson Memorial High, ranked No. 1 in the Gannett New Jersey State Top 20, ruled the night as they handled No. 3 Cherry Hill Camden Catholic 36-19.
After winning just eight of 14 bouts in a 37-25 victory over south Jersey’s other 500-pound gorilla, Paulsboro High, earlier in the month, Jackson raced to a 6-0 early lead and won nine matches against the Irish (20-6).
Jackson’s early surge was fueled by decisions by Brian Cohen (125) and Corey Biscaha (130), who won 1-0 over Ryan Masterson after the Irish elected to have Masterson start neutral in the third period. Camden Catholic won two of the next three bouts, decisions by state qualifier Dakota Moore (135) and Jackson Brady (145), but Jackson’s Sean Byrnes scored a pin at 140 and the Jaguars lead stayed at six, 12-6.
A technical fall by state champion Scott Winston (152) and a decision by Joe Carey (160) made it 20-6 as Jackson kept pulling away each time the Irish made a bid to catch up.
An upper-weight switch by Camden Catholic paid dividends the next two matches – Chris Franz getting a major decision at 171 and senior state runner-up Anthony Trongone a pin at 189 as Camden Catholic pulled within 20-16 and was looking for more. Instead, Jackson virtually clinched as Frank Anderson (215) pinned Brian Posch and Dan Hopkins (285) outlasted Anthony Maloney, 3-2.
That made it 29-16 and even Mike Tully’s 4-2 victory over Derrik Russell at 103 still left Jackson with a 10-point lead. The Jaguars closed it out with Kyle Kinchen’s major decision at 112 and Rob Swan’s win at 119.
“We wanted to try to neutralize them at 215 but they didn't change their strategy,” Camden Catholic coach Pete DiPol told the Cherry Hill Courier-Post. “They are a great team and we knew we needed everything to go our way to make this a better match. But just like with the rest of our schedule, this will make us better.”

Paulsboro wins 300th straight
It’s not “The Streak,” but it’s noteworthy nonetheless.
Paulsboro High has achieved plenty of milestones in its wrestling history. A 52-12 victory over Haddonfield High Saturday gave the Red Raiders their 300 th consecutive Colonial Conference victory, a streak that has stretched over 36 years.
Paulsboro, which also defeated Lindenwold High 69-3 and Haddon Heights Haddon Township 69-0 that day to make it 302 straight, last lost a conference match to Haddon Township, 25-16, on Feb. 3, 1971.
